GMB Trade Union - Rise in hate crime 'heart-breaking and enraging'

GMB, Britain’s general union, has described rocketing hate crime figures as ‘heart-breaking and enraging.’

Figures released this morning show that in 2018/19, there were 103,379 hate crimes recorded by the police in England and Wales, up by 10% the year before.

Hate crime has also rocketed 65% since 2015/16 – before the EU referendum.

Tim Roache, GMB General Secretary, said:

“To see hate crime rocketing like this is truly heart-breaking and enraging.

“Abusing someone for the colour of their skin or their sexuality is absolutely disgusting.

“It’s 2019 and we are seeing racist abuse at football games in the UK – while last night’s game in Bulgaria was almost called off after Nazi salutes in the crowd.

“Discrimination in all its forms must stop now – no ifs, no buts.”
