Green future for the automotive sector will secure well paid skilled jobs in these sectors, says GMB Union 

GMB, the energy union, has described Nissan’s major expansion of electric vehicle production at its car plant in Sunderland as a ‘vital step in UK’s journey to net zero’. 

Gary Carter, GMB National Energy Officer, said: 

"The automotive industry is going through a transformation which is going to increase rapidly in the next few years.  

"It's vital that UK manufacturing, automotive and energy sectors are at the forefront of this change and the Government provides policy, investment and action to make sure the pace of EV installation intensifies. 

“Today’s announcement from Nissan is a vital step in the UK’s journey to net zero.

"Battery manufacturing must be close at hand and the National Grid needs increased capacity to meet demand.  

"This can create a growth in new green jobs with new skills, which need to be well paid jobs."
