Customers will have to cross a picket line to get barbecue and picnic supplies
More than 100 workers at Asda’s Brighton Hollingbury superstore are set to down tools from 20:00 on Friday 24 May until 15:00 on Saturday 25 May.
A demonstration has been planned between 12:00 and 13:00 on the Saturday, outside the store.
Members of GMB, the union for Asda, voted to take action this weekend over a number of workplace issues, including:
- Cuts in hours
- Poor quality training
- Health and safety issues not being addressed
- Pressured work rates
- Payroll issues and incorrect pay
- Equal pay not resolved in a timely manner
- No collective bargaining with GMB
Declan MacIntyre, GMB Regional Organiser said:
“GMB has appealed to Asda management to meet us and try and avert this strike.
“They’ve not met with us - so this industrial action will be interrupting the store over the Bank Holiday weekend.
“Countless customers from across Brighton will be hoping to buy barbecue and picnic supplies; they’ll now have to cross a picket line to do so.
“If Asda head honchos are having their purse strings held tight by their financial backers, this is only what GMB have been warning for months.”
