New measures will provide temporary relief – but they should go further
GMB Union, which represents steel workers, has responded to the introduction of emergency legislation to enable the extension of import safeguards on a greater of range of goods.
Ross Murdoch, GMB National Officer, said:
"Steel jobs are under threat from the dumping of artificially subsidised goods, and the extension of some additional safeguards represents an important victory for common sense.
"GMB and the wider industry supported calls for emergency legislation and the news that Ministers have responded will come as a relief to thousands of steel workers.
"We need to be clear though that today’s announcement is a temporary reprieve, and that important questions remain unanswered. We urgently need a stronger trade defence policy and procurement decisions that back our steel industry."
