Union welcomes prospect of “world-class, unionised project”
The formal start of HS2 construction today is a much-needed boost to thousands of workers and the wider supply chain, a union said today.
GMB, the union for construction workers, has welcomed the news as a critical step in the project – and an opportunity to ensure fair and safe construction.
HS2 Ltd and its Tier One contractors expect to recruit around 22,000 roles in the coming years to build the Phase One route – offering people a path back into work.
Jude Brimble, GMB National Secretary said:
“The UK urgently needs to deliver investment in infrastructure, and the start of main works is a critical step in the construction of HS2.
“The construction industry is struggling and today's announcement will be a much-needed boost to thousands of workers and the wider supply chain.
“At the same time, it is vital that the start of main construction work is handled safely and fairly, with clear avenues for workers to make their voices heard when concerns arise.
“That's why GMB is looking to engage with HS2's contractors to ensure that this railway is built as a world-class, unionised project.”
