"Today’s staggering price rises are the kick in the teeth so many have been dreading"
Gary Smith, GMB General Secretary, said:
“Today’s staggering price rises are the kick in the teeth so many have been dreading.
“We are a gas-producing nation with a world-class energy supply chain, but years of failure to secure these critical assets are coming back to haunt the UK.
“Unlike so many other countries, we do not have a cap on the amount of gas we send overseas, a decision that has left us vulnerable to rapid increases in international energy prices.
“The Government should stop being April fools and adopt GMB’s Fair Share policy, that ringfences a portion of the gas we produce to meet the UK’s needs.
“Looking to the long-term, we urgently need a real national energy strategy that progresses nuclear and hydrogen, with good jobs and secure and affordable supply at its heart.”
