GMB Trade Union - New report backs GMB’s campaign to keep £1 billion shipbuilding order in UK

GMB, the lead union for shipbuilding and ship repair workers, has welcomed a major new report which backs GMB’s  campaign to keep a crucial £1billion shipbuilding order in the UK.

GMB, the lead union for shipbuilding and ship repair workers, has welcomed a major new report which backs GMB’s  campaign to keep a crucial £1billion shipbuilding order in the UK.

The All Party Parliamentary Group  [APPG] for Shipbuilding and Ship Repair today [Thursday 16 May 2019], calls on the Government to change its course and guarantee that the £1 billion order for Fleet Solid Support vessels is placed with UK yards.

GMB has long campaigned for the £1billion FSS contract to be given to UK shipyards – producing a ground-breaking report highlighting the estimated 6,700 jobs created or secured if the orders were kept in the UK

Ross Murdoch, GMB National Officer and CSEU Chair, said:

“This detailed and convincing cross-party report is an important intervention.

“Ministers promised a shipbuilding ‘renaissance’ but instead skilled workers are being laid off while major orders are sent overseas.

“The UK needs its own military shipbuilding capacity - Penny Mourdant now has an historic opportunity to change course and help secure the future of jobs and yards that are under threat.

“GMB calls on the Government to adopt this important report and guarantee that in future all Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships will be built in UK yards.”
