GMB, the union for private hire drivers, has responded to new licensing guidance issued by the Department for Transport.
Mick Rix, GMB National Officer, said:
"GMB Union actively took part in the Government appointed task and finish group that was put together as a reaction to the All Party Parliamentary Group report.
"We have campaigned for an update to the law which will beef up regulation due to a serious breakdown in standards and a 'wild west' situation taking place in most towns and cities.
"The task and finish group came up with recommendations that we believe the vast majority in the industry can support.
"We hope the Government's proposals match our ambitions and that badly needed reform and regulation is introduced as quickly as possible."
