GMB Trade Union - Government Must Act to Support Hundreds of Skilled Jobs at Cammell Laird

With the right Government investment, we can protect existing skilled jobs and create a new generation of shipbuilders and engineers.

The yard is busy, and the potential for long-term, high-quality employment in the region is clear. But without government action, this opportunity could be lost.

Last week, GMB General Secretary Gary Smith visited the shipyard, accompanied by staff and members alike.

He saw encouraging signs of growth and plenty of opportunities for both the union and workers on site. The potential for expansion is there – but government backing is essential to secure jobs and strengthen the industry for the future.

GMB is calling on ministers to back British shipbuilding and commit to securing the long-term future of yards like Cammell Laird.

Albie McGuigan, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

"There is a massive opportunity here to invest in apprenticeships and secure skilled jobs for the future.

"Shipbuilding is vital to our economy, our communities, and our national security.

"We have the skills, the workforce, and the capacity – now we need the investment to match.

"GMB will keep fighting to ensure these jobs stay in the UK and aren’t lost to government indifference.”
