GMB Trade Union - GMB welcome end to zero hour contracts in Hull homecare

GMB Midland & East Coast region have welcomed the news that Hull City Council will introduce radical improvements to the terms and conditions of its home care and domiciliary care workforce.

The move, which was announced by the Labour-led authority this week, will mark a drastic improvement in the employment rights of a group of key workers in Hull and surrounding area.

As one of Britain’s biggest unions in care, GMB have been campaigning for improvement’s in the rights of home care and domiciliary care workers.

Les Dobbs, Senior Organiser for Public Services and the Hull area said:

"Hull City Council have shown that it is possible for a local authority to acknowledge and reward the key role care workers play in our society. These workers have continued day in day out throughout this crisis, caring for some of the most vulnerable residents of Hull and surrounding areas.

Local Authorities across the country should take note and see this for what it is, a bold and positive step in the right direction".

The changes include scrapping unfair zero-hour contracts, an end to 'pay-by-minute' practises and improvements in the organisation of care delivery.
