GMB Trade Union - GMB calls for answers on care home spending in York

GMB has called on care providers in York to step up their response in protecting staff and patients from the spread of covid-19

GMB, the union for social care staff, has called on care providers to ‘step up their game’ and ‘learn the lessons on how the virus can be managed’ to reassure hard pressed carers.

Last week the union revealed some of the £600 million announced for infection control in care homes has yet to reach the front line.

Now in a letter to York Council, GMB has asked for clarification on whether the funds have been made available from Westminster and how and where the funds have been spent.

The union have also called on the council to outline what measures are being implemented to protect staff and residents from the deadly virus.

Katherine Mitchell, GMB organiser said:

"GMB members and their colleagues have been risking their own health to look after our loved ones in a system that was at breaking point even before the pandemic.

“It’s important that we know where and how this money is being spent, so that we know where the big issues are before the infection numbers start to multiply. We owe it to staff and those they look after to get answers as soon as possible so that we can best protect them.

“It’s vital that all parties respond as soon as possible to ensure that patients are best protected”.
