GMB Trade Union - Devon County Council backs down on fire and rehire

Devon County Council (DCC) has backed down on its threat to fire and rehire almost 1,000 staff, after a GMB campaign.

Following negotiations with the union, the local authority has agreed to new terms and conditions for workers.

After negotiations with GMB, Devon County Council has agreed to new terms for 800 staff

Workers were angry over the councils’ proposals to remove the Essential Car User Allowance, which would have significantly impacted social workers, carers and education welfare officers who use their vehicles for work.

After an intense campaign by union members, including a petition signed by more than 2,000 people, the council returned to discussions and put forward an improved offer.

GMB members have unanimously accepted the deal.

Jake McLean, GMB Regional Organiser, said:

“GMB welcomes DCC’s decision to remove fire and rehire, it was an unnecessary threat looming over our members.

“The ballot result shows through constructive negotiation we can secure a far more equitable result.

“Our members and the public came together; now the council has seen and everyone can get back to concentrating on their jobs.”
