End Fire and Rehire - email your MP

The GMB dispute at British Gas has brought national attention to fire and rehire but unfortunately, it’s still spreading.

Lots of workers have faced threats of sacking by an employer trying to force them onto a worse contract.

But it isn’t illegal in the UK. We think this needs to change.

You can help in our campaign to end fire and rehire. All you need to do is fill in your details to send the email below to your local MP.

Dear MP,

Fire and rehire has long been used as tactic to change terms and conditions without agreement. In Asda, British Gas, schools, councils, and many others, we've seen its devastating impact.

At the conclusion of British Gas’s dispute, hundreds of loyal and hardworking engineers were sacked after refusing to sign up to a 15% cut in pay and attacks on their terms and conditions.

The company is now foundering with the loss of these skilled workers, the damage to industrial relations and the loss of a significant number of customers - as well as incalculable damage to their brand.

This is unsurprising as more than three quarters of the public want fire and rehire to be made illegal.

67% of people are less likely to buy goods or services from an employer which used fire and rehire.

Despite this, the use of fire and rehire has increased. One in ten workers have been threatened with fire and rehire during the pandemic.

Given the massive public opposition and the political consensus that the process of fire-and-rehire is unacceptable, I believe that now is the time for change.

Fire-and-rehire amounts to a fundamental break down in industrial relations, a breach of trust between an employer and their workers and a backslide into cruel Victorian working practices that damage workplace efficiency.

The use of such heartless and outdated tactics makes valuable workers leave.  It creates a culture of discord and can set a productive workplace back years.

I hope you agree that we can be better than that.

I’m asking for your help in bringing an end to fire and rehire. I’m asking that you sign up to the GMB Birmingham and West Midlands Region’s End Fire and Rehire Pledge:

No worker should be sacked by employers trying to force them onto a worse contract.

Until fire and rehire is outlawed, I pledge to remember the sacked and fight to change the law.

I look forward to your response.

Yours,
